Employers are required by law to protect the health and safety of their workers.

There are some categories of workers who require specific surveillance due to the nature of their employment:

  • Workers exposed to sensitising agents are required to have lung function tests (Spirometry).
  • Vision tests are required for some categories of employee. VDU/DSE users are required to be provided with screening for middle distance vision (Display Screen Regulations 1992). Similarly colour vision for a checker, distance vision for a driver, and peripheral vision for a fork lift truck driver.
  • Forklift truck drivers are required to have checks which cover HSE requirements for standards of physical and mental health. Specifically vision, hearing, mobility, blood pressure and urine sample check.
  • Night workers are required to have a fitness check which covers conditions which could be exacerbated by working at night.
